Berkeley Castle

Op een mooie zomerse zondag in augustus heb ik met mijn gezin Berkley Castle bezocht. Het kasteel ligt in het gelijknamige stadje Berkeley in de graafschap van Gloucestershire. Het kasteel is geopend van 28 maart tot 31 oktober. Berkeley Castle is een zeer bijzonder kasteel met een opmerkelijk feit, wat het kasteel uniek maakt in Engeland. Daarnaast hebben het kasteel en zijn bewoners altijd een grote rol gespeeld in de geschiedenis van Engeland en de Engelse Royals en mogelijk in een koninklijk moordcomplot.
Het kasteel behoort tot de zogenaamde “March Castles“. Het kasteel maakte hiermee deel uit van een verdedigingslinie van kastelen om Wales “buiten te houden”. Het is heel goed gefortificeerd en het land dat rondom het kasteel ligt kan ter verdediging onder water worden gezet. Opmerkelijk aan het kasteel is dat het al negen eeuwen bewoond wordt door dezelfde familie. De Berkeley familie genaamd. De archieven die in het bezit zijn van de familie gaan terug naar de 12e eeuw. Het landgoed om het kasteel heen bevat 6000 ares en heeft een van de beste voorbeelden van een middeleeuws hertenkamp in het land. Verder heeft het 18 boerderijen die land huren van de familie en een heeft de familie ook nog een stuk van de rivier de Severn in hun bezit. De familie Berkeley is de enige Engelse familie in het land die al generaties leeft met behoud van al hun bezittingen. Hierdoor zijn zij de enige familie die terug te traceren zijn op hun stamboom via vader en zoon tot de tijd van de Saksen. Het kasteel is het enige gebouw in Engeland dat al zo lang bewoond wordt door dezelfde familie, die het ook heeft gebouwd. Daarnaast heeft de familie eeuwenlang heel dicht bij de troon gestaan.
Gedurende de eeuwen heeft de familie Berkeley vele objecten van historische waarde verzameld. Deze objecten geven goed de geschiedenis van het kasteel weer. Een drietal objecten zijn van zeer grote waarde voor het kasteel namelijk: Frances Drake’s Cabin Chest, Queen Elizabeth I ‘s bedsprei en een spandoek dat de 4e Earl of Berkeley meenam naar de slag om Culloden. Al eeuwen geloofd men dat het kasteel de scene was voor de moord op Koning Edward II in 1327. Zijn vrouw Koningin Isabella en haar handlanger Roger Mortimer moesten van hem af en lieten hem gevangen nemen. Hij zat in Berkeley kasteel gevangen en is daar vermoedelijk vermoord in zijn cel. Die cel is overigens nog steeds te bezoeken. Het officiële verhaal van het parlement was dat de koning een tragisch ongeluk had gehad. Toch bleven vele bronnen beweren dat hij was vermoord in het kasteel. Het lichaam werd vlak na Koning Edward II zijn dood gebalsemd en hij lag een maand “opgebaard” in Berkeley Castle. Na een maand deed Thomas Berkeley het lichaam begeleiden naar Gloucester Abbey. Thomas werd beschuldigd van moord op de koning maar later vrijgesproken. Het raadsel om de moord op de koning is overigens nooit opgelost.
Het kasteel heeft tijdens zijn bestaan ook een aantal malen hoog bezoek mogen ontvangen. In 1535 bezocht Henry VIII samen met Anne Boleyn het kasteel nadat ze Gloucester hadden bezocht. In de laat 16e eeuw zou hun dochter Koningin Elizabeth I het kasteel bezoeken en speelde zij bowls op de bowling green. Berkeley is overigens ook te zien in heel veel scenes van de televisiefilm “The other Boleyn Girl”. Verder werden er opnames gemaakt voor ” The Valencian Castle in Galavant. In 2019 werd het kasteel gebruikt als filmdecor voor seizoen 2 van “The Spanish Princess”. Vanwege zijn opmerkelijke geschiedenis zijn er ook een tweetal boten en een trein vernoemd naar twee Earls van Berkeley.

On a beautiful summer Sunday in August together with my family I have visited Berkely Castle. The castle lies in the epomumous town of Berkeley in the county of Gloucestershire. The castle is open from the 28th of March until the 31st of October. Berkeley Castle is a very special castle with a remarkable fact, which makes the castle unique in England. The castle also plays a part in an unsolved royal murder mystery form an English Royal.
The castle belongs to a so-called group of “March castles” which makes the castle part of a defence line of castles to keep out the Welsh. It is very well fortified and the land surrounding the castle can be artificially flooded. A remarkable fact of the castle is that the castle is inhabited by the same family for nine generations! This family is also called Berkeley. The archives of the family dating back to the 12th century. The estate measures 6000 acres of land and has one of the best examples of a medieval Deer Park. The castle has also 18 working farms who renting the plots of land from the Berkeley family. On top of that part of the River Severn runs onto the family and is therefore also for that part property of the family. The Berkeley family is the only English family in country who remained for generations at one place and without losing properties due to all sort of circumstances. The family pedigree can be traced back via father and son for generations all the way to the Saxons. The castle is the only building in England that is still inhabited by the family who built it. Next to that the family was close to the throne for many centuries.
During the centuries the Berkeley family collected many objects from historical value. These objects reflect the history of the castle. Three objects are at great value to the castle: Frances Drake’s Cabin Chest, Queen Elizabeth I’s bedspread and a banner from the 4th Earl of Berkeley which he took to the Battle of Culloden. For centuries there is the believe that the castle was a scene of the murder on King Edward II in 1327. His wife Queen Isabella and her accomplice Roger Mortimer wanted to get rid of the king. They let him capture the king and put him into a prison in Berkeley Castle. Rumour has it that the king was murdered in his cell in the castle. The cell where the king was imprisoned is still accessible today. The official story from the parliament was that the king had met a tragical accident. Many sources kept telling and believing that the king was murdered at the castle. The body was directly after his death embalmed and the king was lying in state for a month in Berkeley Castle. After a month the body of the king was accompanied by Thomas Berkely for the funeral in Gloucester Abbey. Thomas was accused of murdering a king but was acquitted because there was not much evidence. There royal murder riddle was never solved.
The castle had also a lot of special visitors during its existence. In 1535 Henry VII and Anne Boleyn visited the castle after they had visited Gloucester. In the late 16th century, their daughter Queen Elizabeth I visited the castle and played bowls on the bowling green. Berkeley was also used as film location for “The other Boleyn Girl”. There were scenes filmed for “The Valencian Castle in Galavant”. More recent in 2019 the castle was used for scenes from the series “The Spanish Princess”. Because of the castle its remarkable history there are two ships, and a train named after the castle.
