In de graafschap Gloucestershire vijf kilometer van het pittoreske stadje Tetbury ligt Westonbirt arboretum. Dit is het meest bekende arboretum in Engeland en is opgericht door Robert Stayner Holford in 1829. Zijn zoon George deed het arboretum nog meer uitbreiden na zijn dood. Toen ook hij kwam te overlijden kwam het arboretum via zijn neefje uiteindelijk in handen van de forestry commission.
Het arboretum bestaat uit 240 ha grond en er zijn wel 15.000 verschillende boomsoorten te vinden. Hierbij zijn 2500 verschillende boomsoorten van over de hele wereld waaronder de sequoia boom. Westonbirt heeft ruim 23 kilometer aan voornamelijk verharde voetpaden waardoor het park voor iedereen toegankelijk is. In welk jaargetijde je ook komt, het is een prachtig arboretum het hele jaar door. Zelf ben ik er zowel in de herfst als in het vroege voorjaar geweest. Woorden doen in mijn optiek tekort aan dit prachtige park. Daarom hou ik mijn blog dit keer kort en deel ik een aantal foto’s van zowel het voorjaar als de herfst. Al realiseer ik mij goed dat zelfs de foto’s nog geen recht doen aan het moois dat dit park te bieden heeft.

Situated in the county of Gloucestershire, only five kilometers from the picturesque town of Tetbury is Westonbirt Arboretum. It is England‘s most famous arboretum and founded by Robert Stayner Holford in 1829. After his dead, his son George extended the arboretum with more scrubs and trees. When he died the arboretum came via George his nephew in the hands of the Forestry Commision.
The grounds of the arboretum are 240ha big and it preserves 15.000 trees and scrubs. Amongst them are 2500 different trees from around the world like the sequoia tree. Westonbirt has 23 kilometers of mainly paved paths which makes it very doable for people of all abilities to visit. No matter the season, the arboretum is al year around a very pretty place to visit. I visited Westonbirt twice. Once in autumn and once in the early spring. Both times the arboretum and its trees were breathtaking. Actually words are not enough to describe the beauty of this place. That is the reason why I will keep this blog short. Instead of words I will add some photo’s at this blog, so you can see for yourself how pretty this place is. Although I do realize that even the photo’s do no right to the beauty of the place.
